The Anton de Kom University of Suriname is the only university of Suriname, located in the capital city Paramaribo. The university was established on November 1st 1968.
The AdeKUS has two campuses. The main campus is located at the Leysweg, at which the Faculty of Technological Sciences and the Faculty of Social Sciences are situated. The Faculty of Medical Sciences is located on the Kernkampweg campus near the Academic Hospital Paramaribo.
The AdeKUS has three main faculties, over 4500 students, research institutes and other service institutes (e.g. the Library, the Herbarium, the National Zoological Collection of Suriname). Some of the research institutes are: the Biomedical Research Institute, the Institute for Social research, the Institute for Graduate Studies & Research, the Center for Agricultural Research in Suriname, etc.
The AdeKUS has a broad spectrum of Bachelor and Master programs to offer, the Bachelor programs are mainly given in Dutch and some Master programs are also given in English. Doctorate programs are offered through the different Chairs within the faculties and the Institute for Graduate Studies and Research. Most doctorate programs are implemented in collaboration with foreign partnering universities.
The research on the AdeKUS is carried out in lots of interesting and socially important fields: from bio-medical research on cancer, research within the field of sociology or law to technological research on sustainable development and climate change.
The Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS) is named after Anton de Kom (February 1898 – April 1945), a resistance fighter, a Surinamese anti-colonialist activist and author, who was killed by the Nazis while in exile in the Netherlands.
